Are the micro-transactions or loot boxes of “Star Wars Battlefront 2” comparable to gambling? Now that this question has been raised in Belgium in recent days, French politics is also addressing this issue.
The microtransactions of the newly released shooter “Star Wars Battlefront 2”, which have since been temporarily removed and are currently being revised, continue to hit high waves.
Among other things, DICE and the executives of Electronic Arts were confronted with the accusation that an unfair advantage will be given to players who are willing to take additional money into their own hands. In addition, politics is also increasingly concerned with this topic.
Just a few days ago, Belgian experts felt that the Star Wars Battlefront 2 loot boxes could be compared to classic games of chance. Therefore, a corresponding authority took up investigations. Although EA defended itself against the accusations, the discussions reached in the meantime also the French politics.
Jerome Durain, a French member of parliament, contacted the online gambling authority in the country and asked them to take a closer look at the loot boxes and microtransactions. If it was cosmetic content, there would be no reason to draft new laws. If, on the other hand, it is about possible Pay2Win systems, the whole thing could no doubt be compared to gambling.
