The experienced and famous game developer Hideo Kojima has rejected the development of AAA projects and stressed that the outsourcing of certain aspects of the development is a big mistake.
For the past 31 years, Hideo Kojima has been working as a video game developer and in all this time he has the “Metal Gear”, “Metal Gear Solid” games, “Policenauts”, “Snatcher”, the “Zone of the Enders” titles and more developed or influenced. He currently works with his studio Kojima Productions on the action title “Death Stranding”. Over the course of these three decades, the industry has changed considerably. However, according to Kojima not everything developed to the positive. Above all, large game developments would have a major problem ─ the outsourcing of certain development steps to external studios.
According to Kojima, outsourcing is not an advantage either for games or for players. The developer thinks it is a big mistake to expose specific components to different studios and reassemble them later.
“An action game can never be completed by developing it after a blaupause and assembling the parts on the assembly line … you have to make small adjustments every day while developing a game,” Kojima emphasizes. A permanent adaptation is not possible with outsourced projects. “Game development differs from film production, so if you imagine a long aisle, then the player has to cross it according to the game design, which has a meaning both in history and in game design … As the development progresses with minor details being adjusted. ”
However, a centralized development would bring significant benefits. If the necessary decisions are not made directly, the efficiency of the production is reduced, which in turn means that some things have to be done again. To avoid this, you have to make small adjustments every day while you are developing the game. “When everything is outsourced, the parts that are delivered do not fit together, so it’s so important to take care of the little things every day,” Kojima said.
However, the developer does not mention certain studios or games where such outsourcing was used. However, one can assume that Kojima will rely on a centralized development in “Death Stranding”. The game, which is to be released for the PlayStation 4 and the PC, has not yet received a concrete appearance date.
