So really many great games for Nintendo Switch are not yet available. Once you have left the vast plains and dangerous dungeons of The Legend of Zelda – Breath of the Wild behind you, there will be mainly minor bites of entertainment left over. Lego City Undercover is just right.
Years after his heyday, the police officer Chase McCain is back in the city. Since his arch enemy Rex Fury is on the run, now all hopes lie on you. The story is simple and effective: as an investigator, you always slip into other roles to do your missions or build certain things to get ahead. The essential features of Lego are directly linked to the action, which leads to a natural gameplay.
Grand Theft Lego
Basically your action consists of the usual actions, the Lego games have been serving for years. However, like most games of Traveler’s Tales also features “Lego City Undercover” about peculiarities. Especially the open world of games is particularly important. Besides the usual chopping and rebuilding of Lego structures, you are usually looking for one or more criminals.
Using your police equipment and special effects through new costumes, you scan your environment, climb up buildings, and pounce on any gangster who is not at 3 on the tree. You will be able to get a bigger range by car, from which you can get a new GTA-style at any time. In the street, you can expect chase scenes, which can be exciting despite the colorful exterior.
But “Lego City Undercover” has more to offer than just criminal hunts. The game world is both large and rich in hidden treasures. No matter where you are, there are small secrets lurking around and some laughter. Humor must not be neglected in Lego games.
The city of childhood dreams
Lego games have been successful for years due to strong brands. The catalog of popcultural allusions is therefore filled with the developers and you can see this in “Lego City Undercover”. Even in inconspicuous conversations are often clever allusions and nice gags about the one or other reference to films, series and games. A nice portion of popcorn entertainment!
The fact that the Nintendo Switch does not allow huge technical leaps, you do not really notice “Lego City Undercover”. Especially in handheld mode the picture is sharp, but also on the TV is a clear difference to the version for the Wii U recognizable. Stylistically, there is no right to complain. Once you’ve built yourself in small Lego cities, you’ll almost have a childhood dream when you drive through Lego City for the first time and feel like you’re there.
In a time when a German setting is increasingly neglected, “Lego City Undercover” also scores with an appealing and clean implementation of the synchronization. Especially in a game that teaches children action games in such a simple way, it is a great plus, if long interferences do not only put on subtitles. Apart from a few misfires, even the humor is largely transferred.
“Lego City Undercover” has on the switch quite one or the other weakness. The refresh rate on the TV is not always constant and the edges could be even sharper. If you have no other current console or use the switch anyway mainly in handheld mode, this criticism falls aside.
“Lego City Undercover” creates a great balancing act, which provides both access to the game for children as well as for the adults, both on the part of the playful claim and on the part of the humor. This gives you entertaining fun, which has a lot to offer for collectors even after finishing the story. After all, it would take quite a while before you collected all the vehicles and costumes.
German dubbing is also a plus, even if it does not reproduce exactly the content of the original at all times, which sometimes makes the joke lose. Such scenes are fortunately rare and only tarnish the otherwise solid fun. Whether you’re alone or in a co-op mode, you’re looking for light food that will keep you hooked to the switch even after a couple of hours, “Lego City Undercover” is likely to hit the mark right now.
