For several years, Electronic Arts has had the exclusive rights to the Bundesliga and the 2nd Bundesliga for the “FIFA 18” series. However, the German Football League (DFL) has now announced that the use rights of the Bundesligen will shortly be announced again. This means that interested companies can apply for the rights by 27 March 2017.
The Bundesliga license will be redistributed
Do not worry, this year’s “FIFA 18” will continue to offer the complete Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga. Because Electronic Arts still has the exclusive rights for Games and eSport until the beginning of the 2018/19 season. However, it could happen that the subsequent offshoots go empty. Admittedly, it is unlikely that Electronic Arts will be able to secure the rights and be knocked out by Konami and its “Pro Evolution Soccer” series. However, last year, Konami has started to conclude partnerships with teams like Borussia Dortmund. Maybe you will also try to buy the Bundesliga license.
The DFL is awarded three different licenses. These are the licenses for match simulations (important for “FIFA” and “PES”), for manager simulations (“Football Manager”, “Torchance”) and eSport. The latter is only awarded in combination with the exploitation permission for match simulations.
The biggest question is whether the DFL will return the license package exclusively to a company in the future or instead decide to release it for several games instead. While an exclusive deal would yield huge revenues, several license packages would increase the reach of the league once again. The time will show how the Bundesliga will continue in the video games.
